SEA TURTLES
The world’s oceans are home to seven species of sea turtles.  Of the seven species of sea turtles, six are found in U.S. waters: green, hawksbill, Kemp's Ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and Olive Ridley. Sadly, all six are endangered or threatened by extinction. Sea turtles are threatened due to the loss or degradation of their nesting habitat from coastal development, nest predation, commercial trawling, and long-line fishing, water pollution, and beachfront light pollution which confuses baby hatchlings. Sea turtles are in need of protection in order to ensure their survival as a species. The WAVE Foundation supports the effort to protect these beautiful animals by funding satellite tags used to research and track loggerhead turtles off the coast of North Carolina. What you can do to help:
Properly dispose of your garbage. Turtles may mistake plastic bags, Styrofoam and other trash floating in the water as food and die when this trash blocks their intestines.
Close the curtains or turn off the lights when you are staying in a beach front hotel or house. Sea turtle hatchlings use moonlight to find their way to the ocean and are easily confused and led the wrong way by artificial light on shore.
Support the WAVE Foundation in their sea turtle tagging program in partnership with www.seaturtle.org, NC State Fish and Wildlife, & Bald Head Island. To donate, click here.
